How It Works
The US Navy method estimates body fat from the ratio of your circumference measurements to your height, since fat tends to accumulate around the waist (and hips for women). The calculator plugs your tape measurements into the Navy formula and returns a percentage, then places it into a fitness category. Because it relies only on a tape measure, it is far more practical than calipers and far more informative than BMI, which cannot tell muscle from fat.
Formula
Men: 495 / (1.0324 − 0.19077·log10(waist−neck) + 0.15456·log10(height)) − 450
Examples
Male, 175cm, 38cm neck, 85cm waist
A typical adult male measurement yielding around 18% body fat.
