How It Works

The mode you pick tells the calculator which percentage relationship to solve. "What is X% of Y" scales one number by another; "X is what % of Y" turns a part and a whole into a percentage; and the change, increase, and decrease modes compare two values or apply a percentage shift. Every mode comes down to the same core idea — a percentage is just a fraction out of 100 — so the calculator also returns a plain-language explanation of how it reached the answer.

Formula

% of: Result = (X/100) × Y
What %: Result = (X/Y) × 100
% Change: Result = ((Y-X)/X) × 100

How do I calculate percentage change?

Percentage change = ((New Value - Old Value) / Old Value) × 100. A positive result means an increase; negative means a decrease.

How do I add a percentage to a number?

To increase a number by X%: multiply the number by (1 + X/100). For example, 200 + 15% = 200 × 1.15 = 230.
