How It Works
The calculator multiplies an appliance's wattage by the hours you run it to get watt-hours, then divides by 1,000 to convert to kilowatt-hours — the unit your utility bills you in. Multiplying the daily energy by the number of days and then by your rate gives both the daily and total cost. Checking devices this way quickly reveals the hidden expensive items in a home: high-wattage appliances that run for many hours, like heaters and air conditioners, dominate the bill.
