How It Works
Each letter grade maps to a point value (A=4.0, B=3.0, etc.). Multiply each grade by its credit hours to get quality points, sum them, then divide by total credits. Courses with more credits weigh more heavily.
Formula
GPA = ฮฃ(Grade Points ร Credits) รท ฮฃ(Credits)
Examples
A, B, A in 3+3+4 credit courses
Yields a GPA of about 3.7.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is GPA calculated?
Multiply each course grade (on the 4.0 scale) by its credit hours, add up these quality points, then divide by the total number of credit hours. The result is your weighted GPA.
What is a good GPA?
A 3.0 (B average) is solid, 3.5+ is strong, and 3.7+ is excellent. Many honors programs require 3.5 or above, and a 4.0 is a perfect GPA.
