How It Works

The US uses a progressive tax system: different portions of your income are taxed at increasing rates. We subtract your deduction, then apply each 2024 federal bracket to the income that falls within it. The marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar; the effective rate is your overall average.

Formula

Taxable Income = Gross Income โˆ’ Deductions
Tax = sum of (income in each bracket ร— bracket rate)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?

Your marginal rate is the tax rate on your highest dollar of income (your top bracket). Your effective rate is your total tax divided by total income โ€” always lower than the marginal rate because of the progressive brackets.
