How It Works
The US uses a progressive tax system: different portions of your income are taxed at increasing rates. We subtract your deduction, then apply each 2026 federal bracket to the income that falls within it. The marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar; the effective rate is your overall average.
Formula
Taxable Income = Gross Income − Deductions Tax = sum of (income in each bracket × bracket rate)
Examples
$75,000 income, single
Roughly $7,670 federal tax, about 10% effective rate.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
Your marginal rate is the tax rate on your highest dollar of income (your top bracket). Your effective rate is your total tax divided by total income — always lower than the marginal rate because of the progressive brackets.
Does this include state taxes?
No. This calculator estimates only US federal income tax. State income taxes, Social Security, Medicare (FICA), and local taxes are not included and vary by location.
What is the standard deduction for 2026?
For 2026, the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers and $32,200 for married couples filing jointly. Enter 0 in the deductions field to use the standard deduction automatically.
