How It Works
The calculator reads your list, separating it on commas or spaces and ignoring anything that is not a number, so you can paste data straight from a spreadsheet. It then adds the values to get the sum and divides by how many there are to find the mean, while sorting the list to pick out the middle value as the median and the smallest and largest as the min and max. Seeing the mean and median together is useful because a big gap between them is a quick signal that outliers are skewing the average.
Formula
Mean = Sum of all values ÷ Count of values
Examples
10, 20, 30, 40, 50
Mean and median both equal 30.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate the average?
Add up all the numbers, then divide by how many numbers there are. For example, the average of 10, 20, 30 is 60 ÷ 3 = 20.
What is the difference between mean and median?
The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value when sorted. The median is less affected by extreme outliers.
