How It Works
For addition and subtraction the calculator puts both fractions over a common denominator before combining the numerators; for multiplication it multiplies straight across, and for division it flips the second fraction and multiplies. Whatever the operation, it then divides the result by the greatest common divisor to present the answer in lowest terms, and also shows the decimal equivalent. This mirrors the steps you would take by hand, so you can check homework as well as get a quick answer.
Formula
Add: (n1·d2 + n2·d1) / (d1·d2) Multiply: (n1·n2) / (d1·d2)
Examples
1/2 + 1/3
Equals 5/6 (0.8333).
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add fractions with different denominators?
Find a common denominator (multiply the denominators), convert both fractions, add the numerators, then simplify. For example, 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
How do I divide fractions?
Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal (flip) of the second. For example, 1/2 ÷ 1/3 = 1/2 × 3/1 = 3/2.
